Last time we looked at some of the characters leaving the cobbles of Coronation Street this year. This time, we´re having a look at who we can expect to make a return!
Clearly, this article contains spoilers, so only read on if you want to know the inside secrets of who is returning and maybe a plot line or two.
It´s only right that we start with the return of head teacher Brian Packham, as we already said that his return will coincide with the departure of Julie Carp. Peter Gunn took a break from Corrie in December of 2013, and it now expected to return in late Spring, according to sources at itv.
Peter Barlow is returning to attend the funeral of his step-mum Deidre Barlow, as the soap is planning an emotional send-off for the character played by Anne Kirkbride who sadly died recently. The funeral is set to be broadcast in June with actor Chris Gascoyne having said, “They asked me to go back to the Street for a couple of episodes and of course I said yes”, confirming that “It is only right that Peter would be there, and if I can I will always want to keep that continuity. The show has been very good to me. I worked with Annie for 15 years and I loved her. She was a really lovely woman and I miss her”.
Having left on maternity leave in November, actress Paula Lane will return “soon”. Central to a continual storyline involving a range of characters at the moment, the return of Kylie Platt is unlikely to be a quiet affair, especially considering the custody battle taking place over her son Max.
There are also a couple of “unusual” characters set to appear on the street, unusual in the sense that they will be played by actors not known for this type of role.
Although many thought it was an April fool´s joke, Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding will be playing the girlfriend of Tracy Barlow’s ex husband Robert Preston. Carpet fitter Robert married Tracy in 1996, before the par left for london and Tracy returned in 2002 after having an affair. Sarah Harding said, “I am extremely excited to be joining Coronation Street. As a fan of the show it is a huge honour for me to join the cast. I can’t wait to get started!”
Finally, comedy actor and TV presenter Paddy McGuinness will play Dougie Ryan, a “wilderness survival enthusiast”, hitting our screens in August. The story will see Dougie giving “Bear Grylls and Ray Mears a run for their money” when his character meets the Tinkers and the Dobbs on a camping holiday.
Meanwhile, after last week´s news of a big cast cull, Corrie bosses have offered some future reassurance to at least two cast members after it was revealed that both Brooke Lee Vincent and Kim Marsh have been given long-term contracts, so we can expect to see both Sophie Webster and Michelle (surname removed for spoiler reasons) on our screens for some time yet.
