A new device approved for use in America, will law enforcement officers to track mobile phone data, including who you´ve been calling, where you and they are and other sensitive data. The Stingray is a device that can fit in a briefcase and mimics a telecom transmission tower. The result being that all mobile phones in the vicinity assume it to be their closest mast and attempt to connect, thus allowing the device to retrieve and log the information on the phone. Originally invented for use by the military, the police in the US are coming under increasing criticism for the militarisation, their defence being that so long as criminals develop new ways to break the law and risk the lives of those they protect and serve, they have no choice but to be one step ahead.
