Officers from the local police in Benidorm have arrested a 35 year old male, believed to be of Serbian nationality, after he stole a car from outside a car dealership, in which a child under 7 years of age was left sleeping.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the owners of the Citroen C5 had left the car, with the keys in the ignition, and the child asleep, in order for them to look at another car in the showroom on avenida Comunidad Valenciana

It is believed that the thief was not aware of the child being inside the vehicle, and just saw an opportunity to steal the vehicle on account of the keys being left inside. The car sped away from the scene, causing the wheels to spin and skid, which alerted the owners that it was being stolen, as it fled in the direction of Altea.

A local police patrol who were in the area also heard the skis, which alerted them to a situation taking place, and managed to intercept the vehicle just 200 metres from where it was taken from.

The man remains in custody pending confirmation of his identity, as the police have identified two different records of whom he claims to be, one with a recorded criminal past.
