Around 30 officers from Torrevieja´s Local Police force protested outside the town hall this week, owning to what they have called a “breach of the agreement reached” by the government team of their working rotas agreed some 5 months ago.
The spokesperson for the group, supported by the Ccoo union, José Joaquín Lucas, explained that agreements on training has also been ignored and the officers feel that their working rights and conditions are being severely affected by a “lack of respect”.
They do recognise that there had been some improvement following the removal of the previous councillor for the police, but they also say that “the bottom line is the same”.
The operating hours and working conditions have been under discussion for some time, with recent reported problems resulting in times with no police cover on the streets at all, extended shifts, holiday and sickness vacancies in disarray and a general mismanagement of the service.
The officers are calling for further dialogue in order for agreements to be both reached and then adhered to.
