Michael McCartney, aged 78

Just a few hours after the Ministry of Interior, the National Crime Agency in the UK (NCA) and Crimestoppers submitted the latest list of the most wanted criminals eluding British justice, the National Police have located and arrested one of them in Alicante.

Michael McCartney, aged 78, was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant in relation to nine offenses of sexual assault, one of rape and one of sexual abuse of a minor. Cambridge Crown Court Crown had sentenced him to eight years in prison.

Following a call to the police, McCartney was arrested in an Alicante centre apartment, after the caller had seen his image on TV and alerted the police of his whereabouts.

The “Operation Captura” is a Crimestoppers campaign to identify criminal fugitives from British justice who could be in spain. Since its inception in 2006, 63 offenders who have appeared in successive movements, 53 have been arrested.
